Demir Williford learned the business from his brother Cem Williford, who in the early eighties owned a store in a fishing village in the South of Turkey known as Marmaris. By 1990, Demir and Cem opened their first store in Chapel Hill, North Carolina called “Silk Road.” After that venture, Nomadic Trading Company was born.

For thousands of years women hand wove each knot in a rug to tell stories from their lives, and pass them on to the generations that followed.  In our business we preserve the art of the rug and keep their stories alive. Each rug is hand selected before being presented to you.  Thus, each Nomadic Trading Company rug is a small piece of world history.

Once the wool for our rugs is selected, it's carefully divided based on how absorbent the wool is. The wool is then spun using a simple tool called a drop spindle. Natural dyes from flowers, roots, and fruit are used to create the vibrant hues you see throughout our website.

Please feel free to contact us. We are always so excited to hear from you!
